As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Miami and Miami Beach are planning to do it the only way they know how: with culture, music, oceanfront celebrations and the kind of energy that makes the city feel unlike anywhere else in the country.
Because if there’s one thing Miami never does, it’s celebrate quietly.
The official America250 commemorations will transform South Florida into one of the nation’s biggest celebration hubs, blending American history with Miami’s unique identity as one of the youngest, most diverse and culturally dynamic cities in the United States.
The city founded by a woman that helped redefine America
Miami holds a unique place in American history.
Founded in 1896 by Julia Tuttle, the city became the only major U.S. city founded by a woman. Over the decades, it evolved into a global destination known for tourism, entrepreneurship, immigration and cultural fusion.
That mix of history and modern identity will become the centerpiece of the celebrations.
According to David Whitaker, president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Miami offers “a powerful lens to celebrate the past, present and future of the United States.”

Fighter jets, speedboats and fireworks over Miami Beach
The celebrations will officially begin during Memorial Day weekend with the annual Hyundai Air & Sea Show in Miami Beach.
The event will feature:
- military demonstrations from all six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces
- parachute exhibitions
- speedboat races
- large-scale aerial performances over the ocean
In other words: an over-the-top Miami-style kickoff to America250.
Miami’s Fourth of July celebrations will take over the city
Several major events are also planned for Independence Day.
One of the largest celebrations will happen at Tropical Park, where visitors can expect live music, food vendors, family activities and fireworks from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, Bayfront Park will host its annual Fourth Fest, featuring entertainment and a massive fireworks display over Biscayne Bay.
Because of course, Miami plans to celebrate America’s birthday with a waterfront party.
Historic documents and immersive cultural experiences
Not everything will revolve around concerts and fireworks.
From June 20 through July 5, the National Archives will bring the traveling exhibition Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation to Miami, giving visitors a rare opportunity to view some of the country’s foundational historical documents.
Several cultural institutions will also join the celebration:
- Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science will present exhibitions focused on American innovation
- the Miami Short Film Festival will organize special screenings
- the Miami Marlins will host a commemorative night at loanDepot park
Even trains and the airport are joining the celebration
The transportation sector is also becoming part of the America250 experience.
Brightline will launch the Freedom Express, a themed train experience connecting Miami and Orlando through patriotic visuals and historical storytelling onboard.
At the same time, Miami International Airport will incorporate live cultural performances and artistic programming for international travelers arriving during the celebrations.
Miami will celebrate history through culture, diversity and energy
The anniversary also coincides with several major local milestones:
- the 100th anniversary of Coral Gables
- the centennial of The Biltmore Hotel
- and 100 years of Art Deco architecture in Miami Beach
Together, these celebrations highlight something Miami understands better than most cities: history does not have to feel distant or formal.
In Miami, history becomes music, color, movement and community — all happening under palm trees and fireworks by the ocean.
